Golf Chipping Tips
The chip is an approach shot to the flag, in which the ball has a phase of flight plan or shallow, after rolling for a long time. This shot should be chosen when there isn’t, between the ball and the flag, any obstacle or very high grass. Depending on the position and distance, it is recommended the following clubs:
- 7 Iron – fly a third of the way and rolls two-thirds.
- 9 Iron – fly half way and rolls the other half.
- Sandwedge – flies two thirds of the way and rolls the final third.
These details refer to the ground, and should therefore be adapted accordingly in case of slopes. The technique is similar to that used in putts, but with the following differences:
- The feet are together.
- The ball is at the level of the right foot (for right-handed people).
- Hands are positioned on the left and the end of the handle is turned to the left hip.
- The body weight should be supported mainly in the left leg.
If we view the chipping, we have the idea of a pendulum, in which the hands are constantly ahead of the clubhead, keeping the wrist fixed.
Instructions for the chipping
The technique of chipping is relatively simple, but it never hurts to train the sensitivity so that you have the proper control of force. Chipping exercises should be performed all over the green, from different positions:
- Chips long and short.
- In the ups and downs.
- On slopes that droop to the left and right.
- For and against the direction of growth of grass.
The more times you try these different distances and positions, the easier it makes for the brain to store these data, putting them into practice during games.
Sensitivity of motion in the shoulders / arms
Firm grip
- Extend the golf club through the placement of a second golf club, turned upside down. The head of this second golf club stands on the left side of the body.
- Involve the golf clubs with both hands (as in putting).
Objective of the exercise – Firm grip during the balancing motion.
Straight line motion and oscillating
Place two golf clubs (irons 4 and 5), in parallel, in the area by the green and guide them towards the hole, in a way that exists, between the tip of the cue stick and outside space for a ball, and between the heel of the club and stick interior space for two to three balls.
- Distance to the hole: 6 to 10 meters.
- Golf club recommended on flat ground: 9 iron.
- The clubhead should move into the guide formed by two rods.
Objective of the exercise – Proper conduct of the club in a straight line to the hole.
Swinging
- Adopt a bent position with the ball.
- Level of the ball: the inside of the right foot.
- Legs close together, weight distribution: 60% on the left leg.
- Play the ball, hitting it with the front of the clubface.
- The end of the club is facing the left hip.
- Pick up the golf club has you were performing a putt.
- Bend your arms slightly.
Objective of the exercise – Idea of the golf swing (see the golf swing tips area for more information) movement: to move the club head in a straight line without changing the position of the wrists.
Putting with the 7 iron
Adopt a position of putting (see golf putting drills for more information on putts).
- Distance to the hole about 2 feet.
- Run the putt with the 7 iron, without touching the golf club in the grass.
Objective of the exercise – Improving the pace and control the pendulum motion in chipping.
Chipping to a landing zone
- Distance to the flag, about 8 meters.
- Using three golf clubs, score, at a distance of three meters of the flag, an open framework towards the hole.
- Run the chip so that the ball lands inside the marked area.
Objective of the exercise – Develop sensitivity to the right proportion between the path of the ball made by air and the travel made with the roll.
