Golf Putting
A game of golf consists of more than 40% of putts (gentle strokes to hit the holes). For this reason, the realm of putting it is of utmost importance to improve your game. The decisive factors to achieve the correct direction and speed are determined by the exact behavior of the putter (golf club used in putts) at the moment of impact with the ball:
- The putter strikes the ball with the sweet spot.
- The putter moves in the direction that the ball must go.
- The putter head is, at the moment of impact with the ball at a right angle with the direction of the play that you want.
The force of the blow is always the ideal, when you imagine that the ball should stop about 30 inches behind the hole (if not fall in it). When reading the green (the area of short grass, specially prepared around the hole), to determine the exact direction and speed, should be taken into consideration the following factors:
- Moisture from the surface of the green
- Marks of the nails of the shoes, earlier bludgeon marks, footprints or other irregularities of the green
- Structure of the grass (direction of growth of the grass)
- Protruding edges of the hole
- Wind
The correct reading of the green and the factors of the moment of impact with the ball are prerequisites for a successful putting.
Instructions for putting
It is an impulse pendulum movement, in which the arms and shoulders form, with the upper body tilted slightly, a triangle that rotates as a whole around a point on the edge of the neck.
For a pendulum to be held straight in the desired direction, the hands have to form a fixed connection and still with the club. Here, the hands must be on the upright under the shoulders, when viewed from the side. The pressure with which it picks up the golf club can be mild or strong, unless it is changed during the movement.
To developed sensitivity for putting this exercise must be performed as many times as possible. One third of the total training time should be used for putting. To prevent cramps, the exercises should be rotated and regular breaks should be included.
Golf Putting Tips
Golf Putting Drills
Posture of the body – eyes on the line of putt
- Adopt a slightly curved position.
- Pull your right arm to the body.
- Place a ball on the line between the eyes and the ball placed on the floor.
- In the case of enforcement, the superior ball will hit when falling on the ball that is in the floor.
Objective of the exercise – Position the eyes precisely over the ball game, to obtain an exact visual angle to the hole.
Putting in a strong wind
- Adopt a position with legs wider than the shoulders.
- Position yourself in the usual way.
- Run the putt.
Objective of the exercise – Get through the position with legs far apart, a fixed posture and balanced body.
Putting on inclinations
- Place in the slanted side of the hole, three tees (plastic pins that hold the balls during the starting strokes) on the floor, separated by 10 cm.
- According to the inclination for the respective tee, guide the putter so that the ball gets to the hole after making the curve correctly.
Objective of the exercise – Improve sensitivity to the orientation of the putter in different inclinations.
Orientation of the putter
- Guide the ball so that your entry is in the direction of the play.
- Place the putter in the game position.
- The line of sight of the putter should be the extension of the line entry of the ball.
Objective of the exercise – Correct orientation of the putter.
Straight pendulum
- Position the clubs (irons 4 and 5) on the ground, so that they are parallel to the hole and there, between the tip and shaft of the putter outside and between the heel of the putter shaft and the inner space of the width of a finger.
- Distance to the hole about 2 feet.
- When performing the pendulum swing, the putter must not it the rods.
Objective of the exercise – Proper conduct of the putter in a straight line to the hole.
Straight pendulum to the direction of play
- Place a row of eight balls towards the hole, at intervals of 10 cm.
- Push successively each of the balls into the hole, without taking balance.
Objective of the exercise – Create a more aggressive and straight movement.
Position of the clubhead at impact
- Put two balls together in front of the putter.
- Run the putting in the usual way.
- In case of correct position of the clubhead, the two balls should start rolling simultaneously at the moment of impact.
Objective of the exercise – Correct the position of the clubhead to the direction of play.
Sensitivity of motion in the shoulders / arms
- Adopt a slightly curved position.
- The left hand grasps the handle at the bottom of the club.
- The right hand involves the end of the handle and, simultaneously, the left forearm.
- Run the putt.
Objective of the exercise – Have a firm grip during the pendulum swing.
Control of the wrists
- Grab your putter with your right hand.
- Trap the ball between the right wrist and the end of the handle of the golf club.
- Pull the left arm to the body.
- The ball cannot fall when putting.
Objective of the exercise – Develop sensitivity to the strength of the wrists.
Sensitivity of motion in the shoulders / arms
- Pinch a golf club between your arms and chest, just below the chest.
- When the pendulum, try to avoid rotating your shoulders. Further, the second club should make vertical movements and not lateral movements.
Objective of the exercise – Do not allow the putter to rotate due to a tilting motion of the shoulders.
Rate
- Adopt a similar position to the position of putting.
- Both hands grasp the handles of the bag for the balls.
- Gently swing the bag without the handles of the bag to fold.
Objective of the exercise – Improve the rate of movement of the pendulum.
Putting in a circle
- Place ten balls around the hole.
- Distance to hole: between 1-2 meters.
- Run, successively, the putt into the hole.
Objective of the exercise – More practice of short putts.
Pendulum swing
- Place a ball at a distance of 1 to 2 meters of the hole.
- Mark the position of the ball with a tee.
- With legs aligned with your shoulders, place a second tee behind the ball at approximately the level of the right toe.
- Do not touch the second tee during the putt.
Objective of the exercise – More aggressive forward movement through a shorter swinging motion (getting thus control over the direction and distance).
Control of the pendulum
- Place a tee in front of the left toe.
- Place the putter in its initial position.
- The putter must knock down the tee when the pendulum towards the hole.
Objective of the exercise – Move the putter on the ground.
Hit the ball with the sweet spot
Put two balls at a distance that the club head can pass between the two balls with a margin of 0.5 cm on each side.
Place the putter between the two balls and place a third ball in front of the sweet spot of the golf club.
In case of correct execution of movement, the two outer balls should not be touched during the putt.
Objective of the exercise – Hitting the ball with the sweet spot of the clubface to avoid deviations from the direction and distance.
Control of force in downhill or uphill
- Place a tee 30 inches behind the hole.
- Distance from hole: 2 to 3 meters.
- The ball must stand at the tee.
Objective of the exercise – Develop sensitivity to the speed of the ball.
Putting from various distances
- Place a row of eight balls toward the hole, at intervals of about 30 cm.
- Run, successively, the putt of the balls into the hole.
Objective of the exercise – More sensitivity to the proper control of force.
